ReCycle is a music loop editor designed and developed by Swedish software developers, Propellerhead. The software made its debut in 1994, but is still a modern product thanks to regularly maintained updates.
The basic idea behind ReCycle is to change the tempo of a loop without affecting the pitch or changing the sound otherwise. ReCycle does this by cutting the loops into separate rhythmic components ("beats" or "hits"), and allows you to change the tempo or the pitch, without one affecting the other. In addition, the loops and slices are placed on a MIDI keyboard so that changing the order of the loops is as simple as playing the notes, allowing classic Sampling and Sample Rearrangement to be done with great ease.
Propellerhead have developed a file format specifically for this software: REX and more recently, REX2 (RX2). The loops and slices that you create are compatible with many third-party applications, such as Emagic Logic, MOTU Digital Performer, and Steinberg Cubase. Propellerhead Reason has its own special REX/REX2 Plugins called Dr. Octorex loop player, and Dr. Rex loop player. These tools simply play the entire loop in a row or let you move the slices around to create the beats you want.
