Acceptable speakers, but dangerous amplifier
of Greg from Stonehaven:
This is a tricky one.
On one hand, the package is quite deeply flawed. But on the other, it's insanely cheap.
The speakers are fine. Exactly what you would expect from a budget set of speakers. Sound quality is ok, and when used with the amplifier provided you can tune the bass and treble to get the feel you are looking after. The speakers in this package, are perfectly acceptable speakers for those on a budget.
It's the amplifier that I have a number of problems with. When I took it out the box, there was smudges all over the screen, a scratch on the top and a small chunk of metal missing off one corner, leaving quite a sharp edge.
In addition to this, the volume control knob is VERY rough, and the amplifier lacks any filtering or protection whatsoever. Even changing the input source causes a static pop to go through the speakers.
I can accept these faults, it is budget equipment after all. But something far more concerning is the lack of an earth on the amplifier.
This is an appliance with a largely metal chassis, operating on 230V with absolutely no earth whatsoever. In the event of an electrical fault, the case of the amplifier will likely become live and potentially lethal to touch.
THIS is why I can not recommend this package. I'l be keeping mine and fixing the earth problem by taking the amplifier apart, properly earthing the chassis and replacing the cord with a British Standard cord and plug. But as it was delivered to me I consider the amplifier a dangerous product which I CAN NOT recommend.
